Lego Movie Video games

Video Games

Modern themes or sets are tie-ins and promotions with film or game titles.

This is synergy, Lego works with video game companies which gains more money.

Why do people play video games based on movies?
  • They enjoyed the film and so assume they would enjoy the video game and so want to associate yourself with everything around that film.
  • They have not watched the film and so play the video game to see if they would like it.
  • Having that immersive role of playing as one of the characters and so identify with them.
  • Diversion and Entertainment
  • Form of escapism
  • Social interaction with the world wide community as well as personal relationships.
  • To enjoy suspense, action, excitement and humour.
  • Good versus evil
  • Parasocial interaction with established characters from the film.
  • To earn trophies and gain self satisfaction.
Parasocial- One-sided relationships, where one person uses emotional energy, interest and time, and the other party, the persona, is completely unaware of the others existence.

Where can you buy the Lego movie game?
  • Game
  • Tesco
  • Amazon
TT games is a British video game developer. In November 2007, Warner Bros, acquired TT game as part of there move in the video game market. This is an example of vertical integration.

The game was launched same week as the movie- why do you think this was done?
  • Promote the film as much as possible
  • A type of free advertising
  • Profit is maximised
  • Familiarity- game and film become familiar.
  • Extends the pleasure of the film
  • They promote each other
Lego movie used both vertical and horizontal integration. The video game is vertical integration as warner bros worked with their own gaming company. to produce as video game linked directly to the release of the motion procure of the same name.
The video game shares similar themes and voice acting by stars of the motion picture. The Lego movie video game is also an example of a successful cross platform release.

How does warner bros use vertical and horizontal integration. Use Lego movie as your example.

Warner bros use both vertical integration when creating the 'lego movie'. This is due to Warner bros working with their own gaming company, TT games, to create the video game, which is vertical integration as they are using their own platforms to promote and create this media product, the video game. However, they use horizontal integration when creating the film as more than two companies are working together at different stages of the producution.Using both vertical and horizontal integration entices a mass audience, due to 'cross promotion', each company are promoting each other. As well as this, the video game is also promoting the film as they can gain a wider understanding of the film or want to play the video game as they enjoyed the film so much.

Cross media content
Content relating to one media text that is released, watchable, marketed, purchasable, playable across different media products.
The lego movie was distributed across 10 different platforms.

Advantages- Mass audience, easily accessible, adverting for platform sales.
Disadvantages- Limits exclusivity, competitors as they want their platform to be the most successful.
